SingPost issues stamps featuring Art Deco styled buildings in Singapore

Singapore, 27 May 2022 – Singapore Post Limited (SingPost) today issued a set of stamps featuring six conservation heritage buildings in Singapore designed in the classic Art Deco style.

The six featured conserved buildings are: The Waterboat House located in the Fullerton locality; Maxwell Chambers at Tanjong Pagar; 9 Norris Road in Little India; 36/38 Armenian Street near City Hall; 13 Pahang Street near Kampong Glam and 79 Circular Road near Boat Quay.

The Art Deco architectural style has its roots in Paris from the early 1900s, featuring clean lines, rectangular forms, and no decoration on the facades, which is a departure from the prevailing art nouveau style of that time.

The style later influenced many parts of the world between the 1930s and 1960s. The hallmarks of the Art Deco style can be widely recognised, firmly defined and identified by simple geometric design on the façade, and the streamlining of classical motifs such as capitals, arches and keystones. A common feature is a plaque with the date of the building’s construction.

In Singapore, many buildings featuring the Art Deco style were built between the 1930s and 1950s, during a very exciting time in Singapore and bore witness to many social, cultural and technological progress. Many of these buildings are also subsequently conserved, including the six buildings featured on the stamps.

Under the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) conservation programme started in 1989, more than 7,200 buildings in over 100 areas across Singapore have been conserved so far.
