SingPost’s 125 years of of the Vanda Miss Joaquim stamp set
Issuance Date: 22 June 2018

SINGAPORE, 20 June 2018 – Singapore Post Limited (SingPost) will launch on 22 June 2018 a new set of stamps celebrating 125 years since the creation of Singapore’s national flower, the Vanda Miss Joaquim.

The stamp set features luminous ink and consists of four designs, illustrating the creation of the orchid hybrid from its parent plants, shown in the 1st Local stamp, to the Vanda Miss Joaquim, depicted in the $1.30 stamp, through various stages of bloom (70 cents and 90 cents).

The Vanda Miss Joaquim has been a national symbol since 15 April 1981, and as a hybrid, was selected to reflect Singapore’s multicultural heritage. It was named for its creator, Miss Agnes Joaquim, a second-generation Singapore-born Armenian horticulturalist who was the first woman in the world to breed an orchid hybrid.

In conjunction with the launch of these stamps, several activities will be organised at the Philatelic Store @ GPO. These include a colouring contest, a workshop on growing orchids by Mr K Gopalan, President of the Orchid Society of South East Asia, and a book reading with Ms Linda Locke, the great grandniece of Miss Joaquim. Ms Locke will be reading from her recently published children’s book Agnes and Her Amazing Orchid: How Vanda Miss Joaquim Became Singapore's National Flower.

125 years of the Vanda Miss Joaquim Collector’s Sheet featuring a portrait of Miss Agnes Joaquim, who created the orchid hybrid.

Pre-cancelled First Day Covers affixed with the complete set of stamps and cancelled with a special postmark are available at $4.70 each. Collector’s Sheets with a commemorative $5 stamp may be purchased at $8.00.

The stamps will go on sale from 22 June 2018 at all post offices, the Philatelic Store and the Singapore Philatelic Museum. They may also be purchased online at shop.singpost.com.
