Goldfishes make a splash on SingPost’s latest stamps
Singapore, 22 November 2019 – Singapore Post Limited (SingPost) today issues a new set of definitive stamps, designed by Singaporean artist Weng Ziyan.
Each of the eight stamps in the set features a different species of goldfish. The goldfish or Carassius auratus is one of the world’s most popular aquarium fishes. Its history dates back more than a thousand years, to ancient China, when it was first bred for display in ornamental gardens. Until today, goldfishes are considered prized symbols of good luck and fortune.
Contrary to the popularised image of a small goldfish in a round bowl, the common goldfish can grow to a length of more than 15 inches in the wild. Their popularity with aquarium hobbyists stems from the fact that they are inexpensive and relatively easy to upkeep. In land-scarce Singapore, fish such as goldfishes are popular pets due to the small amount of space they require. A lesser known fact is that Singapore is also the world’s top exporter of ornamental fish, with goldfish counting among the top five breeds exported.
The stamps (valued between 5 cents and 90 cents), Pre-cancelled First Day Covers (S$5.80) and Presentation Packs (S$6.85) will go on sale from today, while the self-adhesive stamp booklets (S$3.00 each) will go on sale from 6 December 2019. All items will be available at all post offices, the Philatelic Store @ GPO and online at shop.singpost.com, while stocks last.
