Delivery Addressees are notified of arrival of parcels and are required to arrange for their collection. Charges are collected from the addressee except at Libreville and Port Gentil.

Prohibitions1 Printed and electronic material and films prejudicial to Georgia; pornographic, obscene and erotic material; currency, bonds and paper securities of Georgia; undeveloped cinema and photographic films, photographic paper; coins, bank notes, currency notes or travellers' cheques, securities of any kind payable to bearer and other valuable documents, platinum, gold or silver, manufactured or not, precious stones, jewellery and other precious objects and other valuable articles, military weapons and firearms, ammunition, cartridges; tear gas and nerve gas, and the weapons adapted for their use.
Restrictions1 Cancelled or non-cancelled stamps are admitted only as part of an organised philatelic exchange; medicines and vitamins are only admitted on authorisation of the Records Offices for Medicines and Pharmaceutical Products; seeds and plants require authorisation of the State Inspectorate for Quarantine of the Agricultural and Industrial Commission of Georgia. Printed papers are admitted provided they do not contain printed material prejudicial to Georgia, pornographic, obscene or erotic material.

Ordinary and registered letters must only contain private written messages, documents, receipts, invoices, accounts and private photographs.

Prohibitions1

Personal correspondence in parcels; raw eggs; honey, pollen, wax, honeycomb; firearms, blade weapons and any types of items that can be used for attack or self-defence (eg. stilettos, knuckledusters etc); electronic and high frequency machines; copier machines, except typewriters; bees, leeches, silkworms, parasites and destroyers of harmful insects; perishable biological substances; items prohibited in the Letter Post. If prohibited items are sent in postal articles, one of the following three procedures is followed:

  • Confiscation of the entire article;
  • Confiscation of prohibited items only, the reminder being delivered to the addressee; or
  • Return of article to country of origin.
Restrictions1 Senders should ascertain import requirements from the Georgia authorities before posting the following: raw products of animal origin; dairy and fish products; seeds, plants and parts of plants; fruit and vegetables; hunting weapons.
Customs Duty Inherited goods originating from abroad are allowed into Georgia, free of customs duty, if certificates are received from foreign consulates as regards the right of inheritance and the composition of the legacy. Documents issued by foreign authorities or public bodies should be stamp by a consul of Georgia.

Articles or parts of articles sent to Georgia for repairs or replacement are admitted free of customs duty, if a written declaration from the sender is inserted in the parcel.

Postal parcels and small packages containing non-commercial goods with a value of less than 110 SDR are free from customs charges.
Import Permits and Invoices Postal articles sent to state institutions and co-operatives, containing items of commercial value are admitted subject to an import permit issued by the Ministry for Foreign Trade of Georgia. Invoices must accompany postal articles with a commercial value, which are delivered on presentation of the appropriate import permits and payment of customs duty.

Prohibitions1 Letters, except those exchanged between the sender and the addressees of the parcel or persons residing with them; absinthe; artificial wine; bees and used beehives; butane gas; dried meat; paper for bank-notes; publications; pornographic materials (publications, sound or visual media, etc), which infringe penal legislation; illustrations etc contrary to Germany and democratic principles; veterinary vaccines; feathers, feather shafts and scrap feathers in the raw state; live animals; lithium batteries and cells (including devices/appliances containing these batteries and/or cells).
Restrictions1 Meat and meat products (except venison), poultry meat and poultry meat products; Milk and milk products; animal products, hides, skins etc; sodium nitrates; malt-based beer; eggs and egg products; military materials; microbes; new medical products; plants and parts of plants; spirits; raw tobacco, tobacco products and cigarette papers.
Invoices An invoice, in duplicate, should accompany each parcel, attached to the customs clearance.
Import Licences Goods sent by post are subject to import regulations. Import licences, however, are not required for certain goods not exceeding EUR 22 in value. Senders of parcels to Germany are advised to ascertain before posting that correct procedure is being followed by the German importer.
Gift Parcels

Gift parcels are accepted without import licences provided they do not contain any items such as sweetening substances or drugs for which special import regulations are in force.

Customs charges will not be raised on gift parcels sent by private persons to private persons provided that:

  • the value of the parcel does not exceed EUR 45;
  • the contents of the parcel are not intended for industrial or commercial purposes;
  • the parcel contains no tea or coffee or substitutes, essences or extracts of tea or coffee; alcohol, tobacco products or cigarette papers.

Parcels addressed to needy persons are admitted free of customs duty provided they contain only items of necessity. In the case of coffee and tea the maximum quantities admitted free of customs duty are 500 g of coffee, 100 g of tea, 200 g of coffee essence or extract and 50 g of tea extract. Customs duty is levied on tobacco products, cigarette papers, wines and spirits.

Seasonal (Christmas, birthdays and so on) gift parcels addressed to close relatives are admitted free of customs duty provided they contain reasonable quantities such as one bottle of spirits, 50 cigars or 100 cigarettes. Parcels and custom declarations should be clearly marked GESCHENK-SENDUNG (Gift Parcel) and the declarations should indicate all the items contained and their value.
Packing All parcels must be strongly packed.
Address All postal items must bear complete addresses and correct postcode to facilitate delivery. The postcode should appear at the left-hand side of the name of the place of destination, for example 53113 BONN, 60285 FRANKFURT. Omission of the postcode is liable to lead to delay.

Invoices A duly certified and signed origin customs invoice should be attached to each commercial parcel in addition to one customs declaration in English or French. Such invoice must indicate the value of the merchandise, carriage or full postal charges, and insurance charges, i.e. C.I.F. value.
Delivery Parcels are not delivered to the place of address. Addressees are notified of the arrival of parcels and are advised to collect them from the post office. No delivery charges are payable, but customs dues, if any, are collected by the Postmaster prior to the handing over of a parcel.
