SINGAPORE, 5 August 2016 – Singapore Post Limited (SingPost) today released the Games of the XXXI Olympiad stamp set, in celebration of the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games.
The Games of the XXXI Olympiad set of stamps comes in four designs, featuring sports in which [Singapore’s best medal hopes lie]: swimming (1st Local), shooting (70¢), table tennis (90¢), and sailing ($1.30).
There is also a Pre-cancelled First Day Cover at $4.15 that comes affixed with the complete set of stamps.
The 2016 Summer Olympics, known officially as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad, is the 31st iteration of the world’s largest international multi-sport event that is held every four years. Known commonly as Rio 2016, this year’s games will be held in South America for the first time, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The games take place from 5 to 21 August 2016. More than 10,000 athletes from over 200 countries will compete in 42 sport disciplines – including newly added rugby sevens and golf.
Rio 2016 will be Singapore’s 17th representation at the Olympics, since the nation first participated at the Games in 1948. Singapore’s recent achievements at the Olympics include a silver medal in table tennis at Beijing 2008 and two bronze medals in table tennis at London 2012.
This stamp issue will go on sale from 5 August 2016 at all post offices and the Singapore Philatelic Museum. They may also be purchased online at www.stampdelight.com.
